Why the same letter should not be sent to multiple newspapers

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

We get many comments and suggestions from the users of our site. By far the most frequently asked question/complaint is:

Why can’t I submit my letter to many newspapers and magazines?

Some even suggested that we should start a premium (paid) service that allows sending the same letter to many publications.

Here is why we don’t do it. The editors are all looking for original letters from their readers. They don’t want third party materials or even original letters that have been mass mailed to various newspaper or magazines. This site follows the same principles. The writer even has the option of delaying the posting of his or her letter on this site to see if the letter is printed in the publication first. We, of course, welcome people writing different letters to different publications at the same time.

This is not a site for collecting signatures for some petition. Neither is it suited for mass mailing. Our goals simply are to make the process of writing letters to the editor easy, giving the writers a platform for publishing those letters even if they are not printed and thus providing the readers a window on what is on people’s mind.

WHAT IS PUBLISHALETTER BLOG?

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

This is a blog on Letters to the Editor - a companion site to PublishALetter.com. We intend to discuss various aspects of letters written by readers to newspapers and magazines. How to write an effective letter. How best to have them published. In general what to write and what not to write. We want to address the issues raised by the users of PublishaLetter.com and answer some of their questions. We hope to provide an additional platform for visitors to that site to leave their comments and suggestions. This begs the question - what is PublishALetter.com?PublishALetter.com is a site about you!

Often you have opinions on articles or editorials that you read in newspapers and magazines and want to write to the editors to express them. Perhaps you do not know where to send those letters. Maybe you know how to send them to the editors but are discouraged knowing that the majority of letters aren’t published; so you do nothing!

This is where we come in. We believe that your letters to the editors are just as important and as interesting as the articles and editorials that inspired them. We provide you the platform to pick the publication, compose the letter on-line and send it to the editor exactly as you have written it (without inserting the name of this site anywhere). We also provide you the platform to publish your letter on this site, almost immediately or after a time delay (in case you want to wait to see if it gets printed in the paper first). You want to comment on someone’s letter? You can do it here. You want to comment on someone’s comment? Why not do that too? You want to email your letter to your friends and family? We make that easy too.

So this is truly your site. With that comes some responsibility. Unlike newspapers or magazines we do not edit your submissions. With few exceptions (see our terms of service) we publish all your letters and comments here. You are responsible for the language, accuracy and originality of your submission. This is not a forum for slander, propaganda, commercial offerings, gratuitous self-promotion, mass mailings, personal correspondence or things of that nature. This is a forum for you to share your thoughtful opinion in an articulate manner with the world!

Welcome to the blog of PublishALetter.com.
