Peace Award starts a War

War of words that is. The Nobel Peace Prize for President Obama was unexpected. But who would have thought that it would start such a firestorm in his own country. While there were many letters supporting the choice, there were many scathing ones ridiculing the president and the Nobel committee’s  choice. Perhaps, not so surprisingly, the letters from outside the US mostly were in support of Obama.

Here are some excerpts:

The letter ‘Nobel Peace Prize Turns Political’ says……..What were they thinking? President Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize while increasing fighting troops in one area of the Middle East and at the same time destabilizing another, by withdrawing troops.
The only answer: To provide a carrot upfront, to encourage his future leadership and decisions that will insure he eventually earns it!

‘Childish Antics of Republicans’ said….Rather than applaud the fact that President Obama has been recognized as a peace advocate. We hear demeaning rhetoric from Republicans.

The letter ‘Nobel Prize for President Obama ‘claimed …The President of the USA deserves this award in spite of criticism from several for the following reasons: and then provided five bullet points on why he deserves this honor.

On the other hand the letter ‘Nobel Peace Prize’ lamented ….It is sad when the world thinks you are doing a great job,but your own country does not.

‘Peace Prize’ was more abusive in tone. It asked….Peace Prize!  For what?  Peace with Iraq, peace in Afganistan, peace with Iran, peace with N. Korea? Peace on streets of Chicago? Hardly, nix, nada nyet,

In some ways the more balanced letters were written in India to the local papers. ‘Obama The Nobel Man’ said …Appropos the selection of President Obama for Nobel Peace Prize, one wonders whether it is conferred for his past accomplishments as Senator of Illinois, or as a futuristic laurel for his accomplishments to come!……..Has he worked enough to ensure us all a better future? Can mere hopes be conferred with such a meaningful and astute laurel? One wonders indeed.

In a terse rebuttal to an editorial in the Times of India the letter ‘Nobel to Obama’ said …..I am sure every US president has an important role in world peace (either maintaining or destroying) and by following your logic, a Nobel Peace awarded should be reserved only for the US president, as soon as (s)he has been declared one.

Interesting viewpoints indeed. You can read all the opinions following this link: PublishALetter.com/Nobel-Prize
