Tiger’s tale
Not surprisingly there were many letters to the editors on the Tiger saga. Somewhat surprisingly, most letters made the same point. The point was this - our society is obsessed with celebrities and the media thrives on their missteps. Tiger is US, said a letter.
Here are some excerpts;
Two Wars, 10’s of thousands of American homes facing foreclosure, retirement accounts cut in half, 1 Million Iraqi men, woman, and children, killed, displaced, widowed, maimed, 47,000 Americans dying annually for lake of health care, 20 Million Americans out of work. What’s our Headlines’ “Famous Golfer Scratches Fender, Cheats on Wife”!
Another letter said: We have become a society that indulges in and celebrates excessiveness; his tawdry affairs, with more sordid details dribbling out daily, are but one result. A wife and family were not ENOUGH. The economic downturn does not appear to have diminished this national impulse, just redirected it. Perhaps Tiger’s car crash, ironically on Thanksgiving, a distinctly American holiday, will help to wake him, and our narcissistic country, up. Tiger is US
