Those who can, Blog. Those who can’t, Write Letters to the Editor? Not really.

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

In the age of Blogging, one may ask, who writes Letters to the Editors anymore? Based on many letters that are submitted to the newspapers across the world through Publishaletter, we can answer that question. They are people of all ages, from all over the world, with all different viewpoints, coming from all walks in life.

First, there are people that want to discuss politics. Second, there are people, that want to discuss more politics. Then, there are people that are passionate about discussing even more politics. Yes, people realize that there is more to life than just politics. So they write about environment, business and economy, arts, science, war and terrorism and host of other  global and local issues.

Can’t they blog? Perhaps. But many probably don’t want to make the time commitment or have the technical savvy to start or maintain a blog. More importantly, a letter to the editor, gives them a chance to react directly to an editorial or commentary that they have just read in the paper. A Blog may  allow them to react to a news or an event in general, but it does not give them the opportunity to address the original writer directly. No wonder, we find in our site, Bloggers that write letters to the editor.

Apparently, even those who can Blog, Write letters to the editors.

Letters to the Editor that do get rejected

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

In an earlier Blog we had described in general, the types of letters that do not get published. Here are some specific examples of letters that get rejected.

Letter with no name. Editors do not want anonymous letters. If the writer is not confident or able to attach his/her real name to the letter, it does not belong here. This is not a forum for anonymous tips and criticism.

Form letters with third party content. A few letters may slip through but not many.

Hate mail. Letters denouncing race, religion or a specific person. Letters promoting violence and trouble. They have no place here.

Ads in the form of a letter. No self promotion either. Letters with just a bunch of weblinks also don’t make it.

Personal letters. This is a vast category. Describing family issues is a no no. Petty peeves and personal problems don’t belong here. A good question to ask here is this. Would I read this letter if someone else wrote it?

Letters that just don’t hang together. Poorly written letters. Letters with clearly absurd facts and claims. Letters with no point or focus. Rambling thoughts. Poor grammar. Who would want to read such letters?

Specific complaints and matters sub judice. While some general complaints may be OK, a spefic, one -time incident with a merchant or business, is not. There are other agencies and forums that can better handle specific complaints with mercahnts and organizations.

What kind of letters do not get published?

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

What kind of letters do not get published? It is one of the more frequent questions, we are asked. For a long answer we suggest one reads our Terms of service. For a shorter and less elaborate answer click  on What to Write and What not to Write Here Just about letter box in the letter submission page. Here is an extract from What is PublishaLetter: This is not a forum for slander, propaganda, commercial offerings, gratuitous self-promotion, mass mailings, personal correspondence or things of that nature. This is a forum for you to share your thoughtful opinion in an articulate manner with the world! Letters that do not meet those criteria do not get published here or forwarded to a newspaper.

In a subsequent blog we will give more specific examples of letters that did not get processed.

How do I submit a letter through Publishaletter.com?

Monday, April 13th, 2009

You can write  letters to the editors of thousands of newspapers and magazines from PublishaLetter. The process is quite simple. Here are the steps to send your letter all across the world:

  • Select a country
  • Select newspapers or magazines (if you select USA you have the extra option of selecting newspapers by state or by alphabetical listing).
  • Write your letter (see tips on writing a letter to the editor under Resources column). Use the spell check feature if you wish.
  • Fill in full contact details. Most newspapers or magazines, if they are to print your letter, will likely get in touch with you prior to publication. Without your address and phone number they are likely to reject it outright. Relax. On this site only your name will show.
  • Choose between the options of publishing the letter on this site now or seven days later.
  • Now you must agree to our terms of service and you are ready for the “Send” button
